The Story of Mukobelwa – A Journey of Resilience: My Life as a Refugee

Hello, my name is Mukobelwa Cadet, a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

My journey began when I was forced to flee my home due to tribal war and escalating conflict in Eastern DR Congo violence that tragically claimed lives of many people. Growing up in a region affected by war, I witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of violence and displacement on civilians, especially children.

Despite these painful experiences, I remained determined to build a better future for myself. In 2019, I sought refuge in Uganda, where I have now lived for over six years in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement. Life as a refugee has not been easy. I have faced cultural and language barriers, limited access to education and employment opportunities, and the ongoing challenge of rebuilding my life from almost nothing.

One of the greatest challenges I have encountered is the disruption of my education. When I fled my country, my studies came to an abrupt halt. Since arriving in Uganda, I have made efforts to continue my education, but I have been unable to do so due to a lack of proper documentation, financial constraints, and other barriers. This situation has limited my access to further learning, job opportunities, and scholarships.

Yet, despite these obstacles, I remain resilient and focused on my goals.

I have taken steps to advocate for refugee rights, particularly in the area of education, and I continue to share my story to raise awareness about the realities faced by displaced people.

Through this journey, I have learned the true meaning of perseverance, adaptability, and the value of community. I deeply appreciate the relationships I have built along the way, and I remain hopeful that one day I will return to my homeland and contribute to rebuilding my community.

Thank you for taking the time to listen to my story. I hope it inspires you to learn more about the experiences of refugees and to take action in supporting those who have been displaced, just like me.
