A Voice for Refugee Education: Calling for Inclusive Reforms and Access to Higher Learning
As a refugee who has walked the long, challenging road in pursuit of education, I raise my voice on behalf of many others whose dreams have been denied—not because of lack of merit or determination, but due to systemic barriers that limit our potential. I speak not in opposition to existing systems or authorities, but in support of a future that truly empowers and uplifts the lives of refugees through inclusive, accessible, and equitable education.
🚫 The Age Limit Barrier to Scholarship Opportunities
One of the most critical challenges many refugee students face is the age restriction imposed on scholarship opportunities. These restrictions often disqualify passionate, capable individuals from pursuing higher education simply because they are considered “too old.” This overlooks the harsh realities of displacement—many refugees cannot begin school at a traditional age due to conflict, war, and migration.
When stability returns, they embrace education with determination, only to face disqualification by rigid, outdated criteria that contradict the principles of inclusive learning.
📡 Lack of Information and Accessibility
Timely and accurate information on scholarships remains inaccessible to many refugee communities. With limited internet access and low digital literacy within settlements, many miss out on life-changing opportunities simply because they never hear about them—or hear too late.
🏫 A Call for Higher Institutions Within Refugee Settlements
To bridge this gap, we advocate for the establishment of higher learning institutions within refugee settlements. Bringing colleges and universities closer to the communities would:
Eliminate transport and financial barriers.
Promote skills-building and community development.
Enhance educational inclusion in line with the Global Compact on Refugees.
🗣 A Voice from Experience
I share this not as theory, but from lived experience. I was denied a scholarship because of age—despite my academic achievements and unwavering determination. I am not alone. Many refugees face the same challenge.
Therefore, we urge:
✅ Reconsideration of age restrictions in scholarship eligibility.
✅ Localized, community-based sharing of education opportunities.
✅ Establishment of higher education institutions in or near settlements.
✅ Refugee participation in education program design and delivery.
🌍 For a Better, Brighter Future
This is not a protest—it’s a plea for progress. Education is a right and a pathway to rebuilding lives, creating opportunity, and transforming communities.
Let’s work together to create an educational system that honors the resilience, potential, and voice of every refugee learner.
