The Refugee Voice

Peacebuilding & Social Cohesion

Building Peace. Strengthening Communities. Amplifying Voices.

Peace Begins With Communities Locally Led. Inclusive. Built to Last.

The Refugee Voice believes that sustainable peace cannot simply be delivered to communities—it must be built with them. Refugees and host communities are not only people affected by conflict and displacement; they are essential partners in preventing conflict, strengthening relationships and creating communities where people can live together peacefully.

Our Peacebuilding & Social Cohesion Program creates opportunities for refugees, host-community members, women, young people and local leaders to come together, listen to one another and address issues that can create division or tension.

Through community dialogue, peacebuilding education, mediation, storytelling, digital engagement, arts, culture and sports, we help communities strengthen trust and develop locally led solutions to the challenges they face.

We believe that when communities have the space, skills and confidence to address differences peacefully, they become more resilient and better prepared to build a shared future.

Why Peacebuilding & Social Cohesion Matters

The Challenge

Displacement can bring people from different backgrounds, cultures and experiences into communities already facing pressure on resources and services. When concerns are not addressed through inclusive dialogue, misunderstandings and competing needs can weaken trust and relationships.

Young people and women may also have valuable perspectives on community challenges while having fewer opportunities to participate meaningfully in decisions and peacebuilding processes.

At the same time, misinformation, hate speech and harmful narratives—particularly through digital platforms—can deepen divisions and make peaceful coexistence more difficult.

Our Response

The Refugee Voice promotes community-led peacebuilding that recognizes refugees and host communities as active participants in creating solutions.

We create safe and inclusive spaces where people can:

Listen to different experiences and perspectives.
Discuss issues affecting peaceful coexistence.
Build trust between refugees and host communities.
Develop conflict-resolution and mediation skills.
Strengthen the participation of women and young people.
Turn community ideas into locally led peacebuilding action.

Our role is not simply to speak for communities. We work to create opportunities for communities to speak, listen, connect and lead.

Turning Dialogue Into Community-Led Action

Six interconnected areas guide our work toward stronger relationships, peaceful coexistence and resilient communities.

Peace is strengthened when communities have meaningful opportunities to engage, understand one another and address challenges together. Our interventions combine dialogue, leadership development, mediation, digital engagement and community activities to create multiple pathways for participation.

Community Dialogue & Social Cohesion

Creating spaces where communities can listen, understand and find common ground.

We bring refugees and host communities together in safe and inclusive spaces where they can discuss shared concerns, strengthen relationships and identify solutions to issues affecting peaceful coexistence.

Community dialogue creates an opportunity for people to move beyond assumptions and hear directly from one another. By encouraging respectful communication and participation, we seek to strengthen trust and cooperation between diverse groups.

Our activities focus on:

✓ Facilitating refugee and host-community dialogues.
✓ Creating safe spaces for discussing community concerns and tensions.
✓ Encouraging mutual understanding, trust and cooperation.
✓ Supporting communities to identify shared priorities and locally appropriate solutions.

Youth & Women for Peace

Strengthening the voices of those who can shape peaceful communities.

Young people and women have important perspectives, experiences and ideas that can contribute to community peace. Our program creates opportunities for them to strengthen their leadership, communication, dialogue and peacebuilding abilities.

We seek to enable women and young people to move from being participants in conversations to becoming active contributors and leaders in peacebuilding processes.

Our activities focus on:

✓ Peacebuilding and leadership training.
✓ Dialogue and communication skills development.
✓ Supporting youth and women-led peace initiatives.
✓ Creating opportunities for meaningful participation in community peacebuilding.

Conflict Prevention & Mediation

Communities are stronger when they have the skills and mechanisms to address disagreements peacefully. We support community members and local actors to recognize emerging tensions, encourage dialogue and strengthen peaceful approaches to resolving disputes.

Rather than waiting until disagreements escalate, our approach emphasizes early engagement, communication and locally led conflict resolution.

Our activities focus on:

✓ Building basic conflict-resolution and mediation skills.
✓ Supporting early identification of community tensions.
✓ Encouraging peaceful approaches to resolving disagreements.
✓ Strengthening collaboration with community and local leaders.

Digital Peacebuilding

Using digital platforms to amplify peace instead of division.

Social media and digital communication can connect communities and amplify marginalized voices, but they can also spread misinformation, hate speech and harmful narratives.

Drawing on The Refugee Voice’s experience in storytelling and digital engagement, we use social media, podcasts and storytelling as tools for peacebuilding.

We encourage responsible digital participation while creating content that promotes understanding, inclusion and peaceful coexistence.

Our activities focus on:

✓ Using storytelling to promote positive community narratives.
✓ Producing podcasts and digital content that amplify voices for peace.
✓ Raising awareness about misinformation and harmful narratives.
✓ Using social media to encourage dialogue, inclusion and peaceful coexistence.

Arts, Culture & Sports for Peace

Building connections through experiences communities can share.

Not every peacebuilding conversation needs to begin in a meeting room. Arts, culture and sports can create informal spaces where people from different backgrounds interact, participate and discover what they share.

We use creative and participatory activities to bring diverse communities together and encourage positive relationships.

Our activities may include:

✓ Arts and creative activities promoting messages of peace.
✓ Cultural activities that encourage understanding across communities.
✓ Sports activities that bring refugees and host communities together.
✓ Participatory events that promote interaction, teamwork and inclusion.

Refugee-Led Peacebuilding

Moving refugees from the margins of peacebuilding to the heart of it.

Refugees understand the realities of displacement, community tensions and resilience through lived experience. Their perspectives should therefore be part of developing solutions that affect their communities.

The Refugee Voice supports refugees to take active roles in identifying challenges, mobilizing communities and leading initiatives that promote inclusion, resilience and peaceful coexistence.

Our activities focus on:

✓ Supporting refugee-led peace initiatives.
✓ Strengthening community peacebuilding leadership.
✓ Creating platforms where refugee perspectives can inform solutions.
✓ Connecting refugee peacebuilders with communities, organizations and other stakeholders.

From Listening to Action

Peacebuilding begins by listening to communities—and grows when communities are empowered to act.

Our approach places communities at the center of the peacebuilding process. Instead of imposing solutions from outside, we create opportunities for people to identify concerns, connect across differences, develop solutions and take ownership of actions that strengthen peaceful coexistence.
